Who should opt for an IIT Dual Degree Programme after clearing JEE?

Let us begin by understanding what an IIT dual degree entails. The Dual Degree programme, often abbreviated as DD, is a 5-year academic journey where students can earn two degrees: a B.Tech degree and an M.Tech degree upon fulfilling the necessary academic requirements. It is important to note that both degrees are awarded by the same parent department, but the M.Tech degree comes with a specialization. For instance, a student may receive a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the parent department and an M.Tech degree in Thermal and Fluids Engineering, a specialization offered by the Mechanical Engineering department.

Numerous IITs, both from the old generation (e.g., IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, etc.,) and the new generation (e.g., IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, etc.,), offer dual degree programmes. It is essential to note that not all departments within a particular IIT provide dual degrees. Admission to these dual degree courses is exclusively through JEE. However, students have the flexibility to express their preference for the dual degree programme in two ways. Some IITs require students to choose the dual degree option at the beginning itself. Conversely, in some IITs, students can opt for a dual degree at the end of the 6th semester during their B.Tech programme. The postgraduate degree granted varies based on the specific IIT; it could either be an M.Tech or an MS (Master of Science).

Now, let us address a crucial question: Who should consider enrolling in a dual degree programme at an IIT? Firstly, if you are a student with aspirations for an academic or research career, a dual degree might be an ideal option. One immediate advantage is the time saved, as the regular B.Tech+M.Tech course typically takes six years to complete. Opting for a dual degree allows you to complete both degrees in five years. Additionally, you will have ample time to work on your master’s project and thesis since you can plan them from the first year of your B.Tech programme.

Secondly, if you are contemplating the possibility of changing your career at some point, having a master’s degree could prove to be beneficial. Investing one extra year at the beginning of your career is more favorable than dedicating two years during your mid-career for further studies. So, in a nutshell, it might be a good idea to consider dual degrees as well while indicating your preferences for courses in IITs.
