- Fee Categories: Seats are divided into 5 categories, with tuition fees ranging from ~₹2 Lakhs (Cat 1) to ~₹5 Lakhs (Cat 5) per year.
- Strict Choice Filling: You must select categories in numerical order (Cat 1, then Cat 2). You cannot skip directly to higher categories.
- Campus Limits: Only students with a rank under 1,00,000 are eligible for the main Vellore and Chennai campuses.
- Counselling Fee: A non-refundable fee of ₹5,900 is required to participate in choice filling.
- Refund Policy: If you withdraw before the deadline (typically Sept 30), your full academic fee is refunded.

Ranks 1 – 20,000
Eligible for all campuses including top tier Vellore and Chennai branches.
Ranks 20,001 – 45,000
Eligible for all campuses. Higher categories required for premium branches.
Ranks 45,001 – 70,000
Eligible for all campuses. Expect mostly Category 4 and 5 in core branches.
Ranks 70,001+
Ranks up to 1 Lakh can access Vellore/Chennai. Ranks >1L are limited to Bhopal and Amravati.

Many top-ranking students want to secure a VIT seat as a backup while waiting for IIT, NIT, or state counselling results. According to UGC regulations, universities are required to issue a full refund of the academic fees if a student withdraws their admission before the specified deadline (historically around September 30th). The initial ₹5,900 counselling fee is non-refundable, but your main tuition fee deposit is secure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply directly for Category 3 if I think my rank is too low for Category 1?
No. During choice filling, the system enforces a strict sequential order. You must select Category 1 first, followed by Category 2, and then Category 3. Skipping categories is not allowed.
What happens if my rank is above 1,00,000?
Candidates with a rank above 1,00,000 are not eligible for admission into the Vellore or Chennai campuses. Ranks between 1 Lakh and 1.5 Lakhs can apply to Bhopal and Amravati, while ranks above 1.5 Lakhs are exclusively eligible for the Amravati campus.
Are the hostel fees also fully refundable?
Unlike the academic tuition fee, hostel and mess fees are subject to pro-rata deductions based on the number of days you utilize the accommodation before withdrawing.
