From a Small Town to First Rank Holder: The Inspiring Journey of Sreenand Sharmil

Meet Sreenand Sharmil, an exceptional student hailing from a small town named Pallikunnu in Kannur. On July 26th, Sreenand made headlines across India by scoring a perfect 720/720 in the NEET 2024 exam, earning the prestigious All India Rank 1.

Sreenand hails from Pallikunnu, a serene town in Kannur, where his educational journey began. He is the eldest son of Dr. Sharmil Gopalan and Dr. Priya Sharmil, whose dedication to serving people has profoundly influenced him. Driven by their example, Sreenand set his aim on becoming a doctor.

Academic Journey

After completing his schooling at Chinmaya Vidyalaya Kannur, he continued his higher secondary education at K E Mannanam School. To begin his NEET preparation, he joined the Brilliant NEET 2024 Residential Batch while studying in classes 11 and 12. His foundation in Science and Mathematics was laid during his time in the Brilliant Foundation Course in class 10, which set the stage for his future success.

In a recent interview, Sreenand shared that he learned about Brilliant through friends and family, which played a crucial role in his success.

His Study Pattern

Sreenand’s approach to his studies was both disciplined and strategic. He dedicated 6 to 7 hours daily to NEET preparation, balancing this with his school classes from 8 AM to 4 PM. His study pattern focused on efficient time management, thorough revision, and an in-depth study of NCERT textbooks. This meticulous approach ensured a strong grasp of the syllabus and contributed significantly to his top ranking.

Impact on Question Paper Integrity

An important aspect of the controversy involved a specific physics question (the 19th question), which initially had two correct options (option 4 and 2). Following scrutiny by IIT Madras, option 4 was declared as the correct answer and option 2 as incorrect, leading to a reduction in the number of students achieving a perfect score of 720/720 from 61 to 17. Additionally, approximately 4.22 lakh students faced a deduction of four marks due to the cancellation of the second option.
