The journey to cracking the JEE Main is rarely a straight path. For Roshan Raju, a student from Angamaly who recently secured a stellar percentile in the JEE Main 2026 Session 1, the journey started almost by accident. Today, he stands as a testament to what a student can achieve when placed in the right environment with the right mindset.
In this exclusive interview, Roshan opens up about his initial reluctance, the reality shock of hostel life, the incredible power of a supportive peer group, and his highly effective, consistent study strategy.
The Accidental Aspirant: A Reality Check in the Hostel
Up until the 10th grade, Roshan was a typical student. When the time came for the Brilliant screening test, his friends warned him against it, saying it was too tough. Ironically, Roshan took the test purely as a formality to see what the fuss was about. Fast forward, he secured admission to the IIT batch at KE School, Mannanam, and found himself moving into the hostel.
The initial days were a massive culture shock. Away from the comfort of his home in Angamaly, where his father Raju (an IT professional in Kakkanad) and mother Jasmine (a higher secondary teacher in Aluva) lived, the hostel environment was intense.
“I saw everyone around me studying constantly,” Roshan recalls. “At first, I just copied them. I didn’t know the magnitude of JEE. I didn’t realize how much hard work it actually took to get a seat. Seeing others hustle ignited an inner fire. I realized that if I wanted this, I had to work just as hard.”
The Real MVP: Peer Support and Healthy Competition
When asked what contributed most to his success over the last 1.5 years, Roshan didn’t point to a specific book or a secret routine. Instead, he credited his friends.
Living in a hostel provided a unique advantage. He and his close friends—Rishikesh, Jacob, and Gowri Shankar—fostered an environment of incredible support rather than cutthroat competition. Whenever one of them learned a new concept or a faster problem-solving trick, they immediately shared it with the group. This collaborative learning environment proved to be his biggest asset.
The Secret to Success: Unbreakable Consistency
Many students start their 11th grade with high enthusiasm but burn out or lose focus halfway through. Roshan witnessed this firsthand. “I have friends who wasted their initial time thinking they had two whole years. On the other hand, some started strong but fell off at the end. Consistency is the ultimate key.“
Roshan’s study method was anchored by Brilliant Pala’s rigorous testing pattern:
- Unit Exams: Testing immediate knowledge after completing a chapter.
- Model Exams: Testing a cluster of 5-6 chapters to ensure short-term retention.
- Cumulative Exams: Massive exams covering 10-15 chapters at once, forcing students to constantly revise older topics they might have otherwise forgotten.
By writing around 15 massive cumulative exams and a final Promotion Test covering the entire 11th-grade syllabus, Roshan practically eliminated exam fear.
Navigating the Tough Session 1 Exam
The JEE Main 2026 Session 1 was widely regarded by students as unusually difficult, with a noticeable shift in trends across subjects. Because of his extensive exposure to varied difficulty levels in his mock exams, Roshan didn’t panic.
“Brilliant conducted so many model exams—some were very easy, and some were incredibly hard. Because of this, I went into the exam hall confident that whatever the paper threw at me, I was ready.”
Mentorship That Mattered
Mental fatigue is inevitable in a two-year preparation journey. Roshan noted that his marks fluctuated significantly during his preparation. Instead of scolding him, his class teacher, Joseph Sir, along with coordinator Biju Sir, consistently checked in on his well-being. Their comforting approach—reminding him that a bad score in one test was just a stepping stone for the next—kept his morale high.
He also praised the professors for making grueling two-hour classes feel like a breeze through engaging, fun, and highly interactive teaching methods.
What’s Next: The Road to JEE Advanced
Roshan hasn’t stopped to celebrate. The very day after his JEE Main Session 1, he pivoted immediately to JEE Advanced preparation. He is currently utilizing Brilliant’s e-learning app to study topics exclusive to the Advanced syllabus and is actively writing Advanced-level mock exams.
His ultimate goal? Securing a seat in Computer Science (CS) at a top-tier IIT.
Roshan’s Advice for Session 2 Aspirants
For students gearing up for the upcoming JEE Main Session 2, Roshan has one clear piece of advice: Solve the Session 1 papers. Understand the new trends, identify your weak spots, and practice previous years’ questions relentlessly.
